Harvesting the Future of Jasmine in Egypt

Decent working conditions

The Fair Labor Association, the International Labour Organization (ILO) Office in Egypt, and more than 15 national and international producers and purchasers of jasmine and jasmine derivatives and products are working together to promote child protection and decent working conditions in the jasmine sector in Egypt. The project involves the Egyptian government, local civil society organizations, and international companies. The ILO leads the collaboration with the Egyptian government, coordinating with various ministries and national councils.

The project focuses on seven jasmine producing villages in the Gharbia region and involve field-level activities (field monitoring, capacity building and awareness) with local civil society organizations and jasmine suppliers (A. Fakhry & Co., Hashem Brothers, Machalico, and Herbal Family Group). International companies including Coty, dsm-firmenich, Givaudan, IFF, L’Oréal, MANE, Robertet, Symrise AG, The Estée Lauder Companies, and Yves Rocher are participating in and committed to the objectives of the project.

Project Outcomes:

  • Improved capacity of participants to tackle issues related to responsible recruitment that seasonal migrant workers
    face in the agriculture sector;
  • Increased adherence to national and international norms; and
  • Increased coordination and implementation of responsible recruitment principles in companies’ supply chains

Project Objectives:

  • Assist suppliers in supply chain mapping and establishing internal monitoring and remediation programs in upstream
    supply chain.
  • Assess the profiles of workers, farmers and labor intermediaries to identify their needs.
  • Drive a collective understanding and common standard among multinational companies on working conditions for
    seasonal workers.
  • Boost stakeholder engagement, exchange good practices, and improve coordination on remediation of non-
    compliances.

Project Components:

  • Supply chain mapping. provides standardized and conduct data collection tools and conducts in-person workshops
    on supply chain mapping for project partners.
  • Risk analysis in production cycle.
  • Capacity building of supply chain actors, including raining for suppliers’ management teams and field teams;
    farmers, agriculture workers and labor intermediaries.
  • Stakeholder engagement between supply chain and the government.
