Water use efficiency and equal access to potable water for vulnerable communities in Aswan.
Description
Egypt is a water scarce country and has critical needs in better managing water resources and reducing water losses as well as water consumption. Existing infrastructure and service provision are not able to cope with the increased water demand. High water losses resulting from deteriorated water networks and inefficient administrative processes, reduce to a great extent the revenues of the water companies, which leads to poor maintenance of the infrastructure and hence to a poor service provision. The state policies and strategies for a coherent development of the water sector need to improve, in order to enhance the water resource management and to ensure a quality, reliable and affordable water and wastewater service provision. This programme contributes to equitable access to safely managed water to deprived and informal settlement areas in the economically disadvantaged governorate of Aswan in Upper Egypt and to improved potable water management and service provision in Aswan Water & Sanitation Company (AWSC).
The overall objective of PWMP is:
- to contribute to an effective, efficient and reliable service provision of potable water by Aswan Water and Sanitation Company (AWSC), which will lead to sustainable and equitable access to potable water
Outcome:
- Improved potable water management and service provision at AWSC level
The three-pronged output is listed below:
- Improved potable water management and service provision at AWSC level
- Equitable access to a safely managed water system that meets the present and future demand for the inhabitants of the targeted deprived and informal areas
- Adopted water saving measures among the inhabitants of the targeted deprived and informal areas through gender sensitive activities
