Assessment on Agricultural Cooperatives in Egypt on the sample of the Dakhlia Governorate

Description

The Egyptian government’s strategy to revitalize the agricultural sector involves cooperative reforms. These reforms aim to institutionalize cooperatives as private business by restructuring existing cooperatives into independent, self-sufficient, participatory and profitable businesses. This study will gather the necessary information to analyze the needs and future planning to improve economic cooperative growth as well as benefit life conditions of poor communities in Egypt.

Services

NSCE ‘s responsibility was to assess the cooperative practices and identify the performance gaps and needs to transform it into an independent farmers economic unit. This was achieved in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Carried out an institutional analysis of seven pilot cooperatives to identify their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) at the same time evaluate the cooperative management and it’s structure.
  • Phase 2: Developed in a participatory manner flexible Strategic Business Plans for the seven pilotcooperatives.
  • Phase 3: Supplied technical assistance to implement the Strategic Business Plans. NSCE role within this phase are:
    • Monitoring and documenting the work with seven pilot cooperatives done by the other consultant in terms of completing the first phase activities (in-depth institutional analysis of cooperatives) and implementing of the second and third phases activities.
    • Design and conduct Training and awareness raising programmes within the cooperatives and local communities / establishment of advisory boards of the five cooperatives at village level.
