Water Programme Aswan: Access to quality drinking water and more efficient water usage and Water Efficiency and Economic Support in Nasr El Nuba and Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate.
Description
Dorsch Impact on the project:
Due to the aridity of Egypt’s climate, settlements are concentrated on the narrow Nile Valley and Delta, meaning that about 99% of the population uses only about 5.5% of the total land area. It is estimated that water needs will soon surpass the available resources due to population growth. Therefore, the management and reduction of water consumption for general and agricultural use is a major challenge for the country.
The Aswan Water Programme consists of two projects. The first is “Access to Quality Drinking Water and More Efficient Water Usage”. The second is “Water Efficiency and Economic Support”.
The project “Access to Quality Drinking Water and More Efficient Water Usage” aims to contribute to improved and equal access to quality drinking water for the residents of El-Nassereya, an informal neighborhood of the city of Aswan, and to contribute to reduced water usage and more efficient, transparent and accountable public water services in the Aswan Governorate.
This goal should be achieved through upgrading and rehabilitating the existing potable water infrastructure, through capacity building and technical assistance for the Aswan Water and Sanitation Company (AWSC), as well as awareness raising in the schools and in the community of El-Nassereya on water issues.
The objectives of the assessment mission are to assess the project design, the status of implementation, project management, the extent to which objectives have been achieved so far and identify potential lessons learned in addition to recommendations for future interventions by Switzerland in the water sector in Aswan.
The assessment should also evaluate to what extent the capacities of the AWSC have been enhanced to provide a more efficient, transparent and accountable public water service, and to what extent it is able to operate the newly constructed infrastructure.
