A harvest day for the cotton crops at one of the demonstration sites and a visit to one of the farmer field schools (FFS) for the production of organic fertilizers from rice straw in the Beheira Governorate in the framework of the Nile Delta Water Management Programme on October 15, 2023.

The project team of the Nile Delta Water Management Programme (NDWM) took the momentum of the harvest day of cotton crops in Beheira to advance best agricultural practices for harvesting. In addition, a visit to the farmer field school was conducted to raise awareness on safe disposal practices of agricultural waste generated from rice straw by turning this waste into organic fertilizers. Rice straw is a residual byproduct of rice production at harvest-time.

The overall objective of the NDWM programme is to improve conditions for efficient water use in the agricultural sub-sectors of water supply, wastewater management and irrigated agriculture. The scope of the work is to build the capacity of the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) and its respective departments for agricultural extension and agricultural services at farm level in four selected governorates in the Nile Delta (Beheira, Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakhlia, Sharkia).

Among the project activities are the development of technical training modules for 8 crops with the respective awareness materials as well as the development of an FFS curriculum for 10 crops.
