Environmental Management in Governorates (EMG) of Beni Suef and Aswan
Description
The Environmental Management in Governorates (EMG) is a component of the Danida supported Environmental Sector Programme (ESP) implemented in coordination with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA). The programme’s goal is to ensure a better supply of water to poor rural districts and small towns. The strategy aims at promoting sector reform in order to facilitate decentralized and independent management at governorate level. The programme supports gender specific campaigns to promote hygiene and environmental awareness channeling this support particularly through local NGOs.
The EMG provides technical assistance to local authorities to strengthen their capacity to operate and maintain the water supply facilities in the governorates, supports the rehabilitation of existing water stations, aims at improving water supply and sanitation in 1-2 cities in Upper Egypt in particularly addressing the poor, remote and scarcely serviced villages in the Egyptian Governorates and supports the establishment of independent water and sanitary drainage authorities with consumer participation in Aswan and an additional governorate in Upper Egypt.
The Gender assessment for the Danida Financed Project “Environmental Management in the Governorates of Beni Suef and Aswan” has the objective address how gender issues are being mainstreamed in the “Environmental Management in Governorates” (EMG) as a component of the “Environmental Sector Programme “(ESP).

Practical recommendations on how gender mainstreaming could be improved in 4 specific areas of intervention (solid waste
management, health care waste projects, sanitation projects and small scale water projects) were raised by means of gender-related training and capacity building, M&E activities (with gender indicators), and awareness raising campaigns.
